Calculation details
How repayments are calculated
Plans 1, 2, 4 and 5 deduct 9% of earnings above their annual thresholds: £26,900, £29,385, £33,795 and £25,000 respectively. A postgraduate loan adds 6% above £21,000. Undergraduate and postgraduate deductions can apply together.
Payroll and loan balances
This estimates deductions from employment earnings, not the cost of repaying a loan in full. Payroll calculates deductions each pay period and rounds down to whole pounds. Bonuses and uneven pay can therefore produce different totals. Interest, outstanding balances and write-off dates are not modelled.
Example
On £30,000 with Plan 2, annual repayments are (£30,000 − £29,385) × 9% = £55.35. A postgraduate loan adds (£30,000 − £21,000) × 6% = £540, for a combined annual estimate of £595.35.
Assumptions
England, 2026/27. One job for a full tax year, standard Personal Allowance with income taper and ordinary employee NI below State Pension age. Excludes other income, benefits in kind, special tax codes and directors. Monthly figures are annual estimates divided by 12, not payslip predictions. Pension contributions are excluded. Salary sacrifice can reduce loan earnings; net-pay and relief-at-source contributions do not.
Sources
- Plan thresholds, rates and simultaneous undergraduate/postgraduate deductions
- Loan earnings follow Class 1 NI earnings; pension net pay does not lower loan earnings
- Multiple employers and Self Assessment loan aggregation
- Voluntary repayments may not help before write-off and are not refundable
- Personal Allowance and adjusted-net-income taper
- Category A rates and annual NI thresholds
- NI normally deducted per pay period
- Separate employment NI liabilities and aggregation exceptions
